We strive to understand and support the selected priorities of four schools — helping them learn from each other as they contribute to the higher education sector. The long-term goal is advancing high-value education for students. We support the four institutions named in Mr. Duke’s Indenture of Trust: Davidson College, Duke University, Furman University and Johnson C. Smith University.

We work with the schools to support select institutional priorities for long-term impact. We meet with leaders regularly at each institution to learn about and identify ways to help advance each school’s strategic priorities.
Davidson College is a highly selective private liberal arts college in Davidson, North Carolina, recognized for its rigorous academics, close-knit campus community and emphasis on leadership and service. Founded in 1837, the college offers a commitment to affordability and accessibility, pursuit of the public good and a strong Honor Code tradition with close faculty mentorship and extensive opportunities for research and global learning.
Duke University is a world-renowned private research university in Durham, North Carolina, known for excellence in academics, research, innovation and health care. Founded in 1924, with roots dating to 1838, Duke prepares students to lead and drive discovery through its highly ranked academic and professional programs.
Furman University is a private liberal arts and sciences university in Greenville, South Carolina, known for its rigorous academics, personalized learning environment, unmatched student support and emphasis on engaged learning experiences and community impact. Founded in 1826, Furman’s hands-on approach empowers students to personalize their education, refine their goals and shape their futures for meaningful careers and purposeful lives.
Johnson C. Smith University is a private historically Black university in Charlotte, North Carolina, dedicated to preparing students for leadership through a combination of liberal arts and career-focused education. Founded in 1867, it is known for its commitment to community engagement and developing graduates who make meaningful contributions to their professions and communities.
